Whether you are coming to UMass as a first-year student or finishing your degree with us, transitioning to a new university can be a significant change. Transferring in the spring semester can feel even more overwhelming. Luckily, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts (HFA) works with the university to ensure a smooth transition to your new academic adventure.
Below is a shorthand list of organizations, resources, events, and communities to consider as you begin your time at UMass.
“Welcome to the U” offers a comprehensive overview of life at UMass. From goal setting, to residence life, to classroom tours, you will learn everything you need to be successful at UMass. Your orientation session is your first look into your college, as well. This is an opportunity for you to meet some of your potential future peers!
HFA Student Leadership Group (SLG)
The HFA SLG is a wonderful leadership program that brings HFA students together. The SLG has a fantastic network of resources, employers, advisors, and more, allowing you to build relationships across campus.
UMass Recreation & Wellbeing Group Fitness Class
Feeling like you need some activity? Try a group fitness class at the UMass Recreation Center! Classes are free to UMass students. It’s a great way to move your body and meet a new friend! Our recommendations are Pilates, Yoga at the Museum, and Rec. Spin.
UMass Amherst Libraries Outreach Series
Did you know that the W.E.B. Du Bois library is the third tallest library in the world? Take advantage of all its height has to offer! The Libraries Outreach Series hosts fun events each month to build community. You’ll meet new faces at trivia, paint night, game night, or craft night!
It’s never too early to start thinking about life after UMass. The folks over at HFA Career Services can help you with everything from resume editing, coursework, and internship and employment opportunities. They also host a variety of career readiness workshops and events where you’ll have the opportunity to network with peers in your field.
Undergraduate Student Success Center
The Undergraduate Student Success Center is committed to ensuring your experience at UMass is positive. They can aid you in navigating campus, financial planning, wellness resources, and conflict resolution. They even have an entire webpage dedicated to transfer students.
UMass Center for Counseling and Psychological Health
While your time at UMass is sure to be wonderful, it’s not uncommon to need mental health support. The UMass Center for Counseling and Psychological Health (CCPH) is dedicated to making sure you have the resources to succeed. They have consultation services, one-on-one counseling services, virtual and in-person support groups, crisis management, self-guided support, and many more avenues of care.
The Stonewall Center is a vibrant resource center dedicated to supporting LGBTQIA+ students here at UMass. Whether you are looking for LGBTQIA+ Support Groups, Pronoun Information, Trans & GNC Support Group Meeting, Therapy Dogs, and anything in between, stop on by!
Navigating college is no small feat. The HFA Advising Center helps students with everything from academic advising to career services through one-on-one sessions, mentoring, student programs, and workshops. Visit their office in South College to learn more.
HFA Opportunity Scholars Program.
The HFA is committed to making education equitable and engaging for all. Through the Opportunity Scholars Program, students who are historically underrepresented, economically disadvantaged, and/or first-generation students take First-Year Seminar class together and create and complete a community service initiative. The Opportunity Scholars Program creates a close knit-community built on empowerment, leadership, and engagement.
