About
Faculty research is integral to the vibrant intellectual, scholarly, and creative community at the College of Humanities & Fine Arts. The areas of interest and investigation found among its members cover an extensive range of disciplines, subjects, and forms of artistic expression. In addition to the approaches taken by individual faculty members, collective efforts focused on broad and interdisciplinary applications occur in the college’s research centers, institutes, and laboratories. The college is also home to several academic journals and publications that reflect faculty research and creative interests.
From the pursuit of creativity in the performing and visual arts to intellectual inquiry into the fundamental basis of our existence, and from the scholarly exploration and documentation of our present and past to the investigation of languages, literatures, and cultures, the Office of the Associate Dean for Research promotes a range of opportunities that support and encourage these activities.

Internship Assistance Grants
Presenting Innovative Research
Faculty members in the College of Humanities & Fine Arts present the results of their research, creative, and scholarly efforts at conferences, educational institutions, and professional meetings nationally and internationally.
Research Grants
The college is committed to helping its full-time faculty members at all ranks further their research, scholarly, and creative pursuits. HFA Research Grants are available to support a broad range of activities.
Conference Grants
Conference Grants offer partial support for events to be held at UMass Amherst. To be eligible, applicants are required to secure funding from other sources. Grants of up to $1,500 will be made based on a 1 to 2 match.

Arthur F. Kinney Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies
The Kinney Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies advances fresh research in the early modern humanities.
Arts Extension Service
The Arts Extension Service is a nationally recognized arts service organization that provides consultation and training for arts professionals in the field.
Center for the Study of African American Language
The center’s mission is to foster scientific research on language in African American communities and apply that research in educational and social realms.
DEFA Film Library
The DEFA Film Library is the only archive and study center outside Europe devoted to the study of a broad spectrum of filmmaking by East German filmmakers.
Digital Humanities Initiative
DHI seeks to create an interest-based community that allows faculty to learn from each other, get mentoring on grant applications, and collaborate on projects.
Ellsberg Archive Project
The Ellsberg Archive Project is an initiative exploring the life and legacy of Daniel Ellsberg, the whistleblower who leaked the Pentagon Papers.
Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies
The institute’s principal activities include: teaching and research, conferences and workshops, public events, and visits to the permanent exhibition.
Interdisciplinary Studies Institute
Interdisciplinary Studies Institute faculty engage with one another through intellectual and creative adventure in a range of settings and environments.
The Writing Program
Since 1982, the Writing Program has been an independent academic unit serving the entire campus and it remains a key part of undergraduate general education.

The Translation Center at UMass Amherst combines multilingual services with scholarship and education.
Warring States Project
The Warring Project’s research began with a focus on the classical Chinese texts from the “Warring States” period, the basis of China’s philosophical heritage.
