The Department of W.E.B. Du Bois Afro-American Studies invites the University of Massachusetts Amherst community to share memories of late professor John H. Bracey, Jr., Black Studies pioneer and longtime faculty member who died in February 2023. Tributes may be submitted via this form.

Collected tributes will be used for the Professor John H. Bracey, Jr. Memorial Website, including a memory wall and photo archive. The website will be shared as part of a two-day Symposium and Memorial Honoring the Life and Work of Professor John H. Bracey, Jr. on Oct. 20-21, 2023, hosted by the department. Additional details regarding the event are forthcoming.

Bracey was a leading figure in the fields of African American studies and U.S. history. He helped create one of the nation’s first doctoral programs in African American studies at UMass Amherst, where he also served in several roles including as chair of the department and co-director of the graduate certificate in African Diaspora Studies.
