Rules / Usage Guidelines
The following do’s and don’ts outline key guidelines and best practices for using photography and video across all mediums.
| DO | DON'T |
|---|---|
| Maintain the original aspect ratio by cropping or repositioning the image to preserve quality and visual integrity. | Stretch or distort an image to make it fit a layout or frame. |
| Apply overlays and treatments with restraint, consistent opacity, and a clear purpose that enhances brand cohesion. | Use overlays, filters, or effects that reduce legibility, distort images, or distract from the subject. |
| Use high-resolution visuals—300 DPI for print, 72 DPI or higher for digital—to maintain clarity, professionalism, and credibility. | Use pixelated, blurry, or overly compressed images. |
| Start with well-lit, high-resolution photos or footage—and use color correction or light edits only to enhance clarity and tone. | Rely on filters or effects to fix poorly lit or low-quality visuals. |
| Choose clean, uncluttered environments that support your subject and align with the UMass brand—both visually and contextually. | Overlook the background or setting of your shot. |
