From signs welcoming students to campus to interior building decor, environmental branding allows us to incorporate the brand experience into the immediate setting—improving recognition, awareness, and a sense of place.

Signage Standards

Uniform signage gives a large campus a sense of community. The following standards apply to all signage:

  • Campus signage is maintained by Facilities & Campus Services and guided by Marcom branding.
  • Typography: Signs use a combination of Minion, Minion Italic, Frutiger 55 Roman, and Frutiger 65 Bold.
  • Colors: Signs use a combination of maroon, black, grey, and white.
  • Event signage and graphics should follow the guidelines on the Campaigns and Marketing Strategy page.

Banner Standards

Banners guide pedestrians and vehicles into the UMass experience. The following standards apply to all banners:

  • Banners should highlight key seasonal events.
  • Banners can be used to reinforce ongoing marketing campaigns.
  • Banners should appear in sequence, reflecting the diversity of interests, events, and programs on campus.
  • Banner locations should prioritize high-profile facilities with the greatest student and visitor use, including the Mullins Center, Fine Arts Center, Student Union, W. E. B. Du Bois Library, and Campus Center.

Reserving the Big M

The Big M is a portable environmental branding asset that can be reserved for campus events, providing photo opportunities and a bold touchpoint for brand recognition.
