Susan Hankinson

Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology Susan E. Hankinson is among the four UMass Amherst researchers recognized in Research.com’s 2023 list of top scientists in the world. She previously appeared in the organization's 2022 ranking of Top 1000 Female Scientists in the World, appearing at number 19 in the United States.

Based on an evaluation of 166,880 profiles, the recently published second edition of Research.com’s Best Scientists in the World 2023 Ranking chose 1,000 leading researchers from core research areas, universities, institutions and agencies worldwide. Research.com, an academic research portal and networking platform, compiles data on numerous topics including scientists, universities, journals and conferences to provide information on high-quality institutions and their research.

Hankinson appears at number 554 globally and 367 nationally. Her area of research focuses on endogenous hormones in the etiology of breast cancer in women, including determining the lifestyle and genetic factors that influence hormone levels. This focus reflects a broad interest in the application of biomarkers in epidemiologic research. She joined UMass Amherst in 2011 and earned the title of Distinguished Professor in 2020.

The best scientist rankings were based on information acquired from Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Graph. Position in the ranking was based on a researcher’s general H-index, a calculation of publications and associated citations, and rate of the published work made within a specific field of study in addition to the awards and accomplishments of the scholars. More information about Research.com’s ranking process can be found on its methodology page.
