Brittany Ciullo, a doctoral candidate in speech, language, and hearing sciences, has been awarded the 2026 Council for Academic Programs in Communication Science and Disorders (CAPCSD) PhD Scholarship.

CAPCSD is a membership organization with over 350 programs across the world with the mission of supporting, promoting, and advancing higher education programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders. The organization funds up to ten $12,000 scholarships to support PhD students in the dissertation phase of their doctoral program.

“The CAPCSD scholarship allows me to fully devote my time to completing my dissertation and continuing to learn from my amazing team of mentors,” says Ciullo. “In many ways, this award is a reflection of my mentors' guidance and support. My collaborators, dissertation committee, and especially my advisor Dr. Jill Hoover have provided invaluable guidance on every aspect of my research. My hope is that this project, in turn, contributes meaningfully to school-based practice and children with communication disorders.”

Ciullo’s dissertation research focuses on improving outcomes in school-age children with communication disorders through the implementation of communicative participation interventions. She has previously received an NIH F31 Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award and a pair of awards from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation in support of this work.

Ciullo aims to understand the barriers and facilitators influencing speech-language pathologists’ use of communicative participation intervention outcomes. Ultimately, she hopes to adapt a research-based intervention guide for practical use in the school context, with the ultimate goal of implementing this guide to enhance outcomes for school-age children with communication disorders.
