Cognitive science, the study of how the mind makes decisions, performs tasks, or otherwise functions and behaves, cuts across a variety of disciplines.

Designed for matriculating students in communication disorders, computer science, linguistics, philosophy, or psychology, UMass Amherst’s Graduate Certificate in Cognitive Science lets you create your own program, drawing from interdisciplinary areas that build on your interests and talents.

Cognitive Science Certificate program requirements:

  • Graduate courses in communication disorders, computer science, linguistics, philosophy, or psychology (15 credits).
  • Up to six of the 15 credits may be earned for original research outside your major.
  • Submit a plan of study to the Cognitive Science Certificate Steering Committee early in your graduate career, with no more than nine credits of coursework completed and with your graduate faculty adviser’s approval.
  • Specify a cohesive course package with rationale for your selection that shows how the courses constitute a coherent approach to cognitive science.

AuD or PhD students will receive formal recognition for completing program requirements at the end of the terminal degree.
