Community Health Education 4+1 Program Admissions
Admissions to 4+1 BS/MPH program
The School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst offers a 4+1 MPH degree in Community Health Education to eligible undergraduates. The program is rigorous and demanding and is designed to offer high-achieving undergraduate students a quick path to a terminal graduate degree. Admitted students begin graduate coursework in their senior undergraduate year, and then complete their MPH degree with one additional year of full-time graduate study.
Eligibility:
- This program is open to all UMass Amherst students, AND to students from the Five College Consortium.
- Students from any major may apply.
- Students interested in the Community Health Education 4+1 MPH Program apply during their junior year.
- Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
- Students applying to the Community Health Education 4+1 MPH Program are required to complete a public health internship with an off-campus health organization by the end of their junior year.
- For UMass Amherst students, this requirement must be fulfilled by earning at least three credits of PUBHLTH 398: Public Health Internship. Campus-based internship experiences will not meet this requirement, with the exception of internships offered through the Center for Women and Community at UMass Amherst, which serves all of Hampshire County.
- For students enrolled in one of the other Five Colleges, the internship requirement will be reviewed as part of the 4+1 application process.
Additional information:
- Students admitted to the Community Health Education 4+1 MPH Program are required to take two graduate courses each semester of their senior year. Students are advised to complete a minimum of 96 credits by the end of their junior year to ensure they have room in their schedule for this required graduate coursework.
- Admission to the 4+1 MPH Program does not entitle students to enter the MPH Program directly. In their senior year, 4+1 students formally apply to the Graduate School and must meet admissions requirements to continue in the MPH Program.
- If accepted to the MPH program, students complete the required MPH practicum and enroll in graduate coursework during the summer term following their senior year.
- NOTE: Regular tuition does not cover summer requirements.
The application deadline is February 1st, 2024. Final decisions will be made in March and students will be notified by email.
Students are required to submit a completed 4+1 Program Application, unofficial transcript, and two letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should come from faculty or an internship/work supervisor.
