López-Cevallos, Pinto-Alvarez Co-Author Chapter for New Textbook on Global Health and Healthcare Systems
Daniel López-Cevallos, associate professor of community health education in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, and a team of researchers that includes doctoral candidate Mariana Pinto-Alvarez, have contributed a chapter to the textbook “Health and Healthcare Systems: A Global View,” recently published by Springer Publishing.
The book explores the world’s health systems through a comparative, equity-driven lens. Divided into 13 regional sections, the book offers critical insights into global healthcare structures, historical and cultural contexts, and innovative approaches to enhance service delivery.
The chapter on Ecuador, co-authored by López-Cevallos and Pinto-Alvarez with Ecuador-based colleagues Irene Torres and Daniel Romero-Alvarez, provides an overview of the country’s geographic, population and cultural characteristics and examines the health profile of the Ecuadorian population, highlighting prevalent morbidity and mortality issues, and their social determinants. The authors conclude with a call for building a community-based healthcare system, incorporating community voices in policy decisions aimed at addressing systemic inequities.
“Health and Healthcare Systems: A Global View” is available directly from Springer and through most major book sellers.
