A sand-strewn desert

2023 was the hottest year in recorded history—and that recorded history stretches to the last two millennia. In a Bloomberg op-ed with the conspicuous title "It’s Officially Hotter Than Anytime Since the Birth of Jesus," author F.D. Flam quotes Raymond Bradley, a research professor in the College of Natural Sciences's Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences, on the subject of increasing global temperatures.

"'You often hear politicians—ignorant politicians—saying climate varies and it’s been warmer in the past so don’t get too excited about all this greenhouse gas we’re putting into the atmosphere,' [Bradley] said. But the natural records suggest it hasn’t been this warm in 2,000 years, maybe longer, 'so that’s a pretty exceptional situation.'"
