An aerial shot of a hurricane

Michael Rawlins, associate professor in the College of Natural Sciences's Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences and associate director of the Climate System Research Center at UMass Amherst, recently spoke with WWLP about this year's hurricane season, which is predicted to be among the most active on record. For Rawlins, two main factors could make this year worse than others:

“One is the expected transition from an El Niño pattern to a La Niña pattern in the Pacific Ocean. The next is warm temperatures: ocean water temperatures in the Atlantic basin have never been warmer since record-keeping began.”
