Sharks have roamed Earth’s oceans for around 450 million years, outlasting dinosaurs and surviving all five mass extinction events. Today, however, these ancient predators are under siege from threats like overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change.
A global movement is rising to safeguard shark populations—and to transform how the world sees them. To get an on-the-ground (or water) perspective on shark conservation, WHYY's The Pulse spoke with Andy Danylchuk, professor of fish conservation in the College of Natural Sciences's Department of Environmental Conservation.
“The more that I fished and then the more that I was observant of what was going on in the environment and with these species, I’ve started to realize that, in order for us to have a future for being able to fish for these animals, we need to think about how we can use science to better inform their conservation and management.”
