The BS in space science at UMass Amherst challenges you to develop your quantitative, theoretical, and analytical skills to understand the system of space.

You’ll start by building a foundation learning about the stars and galaxies and writing in astronomy, as well as improving your knowledge in mathematics and physics. You’ll also tailor your degree to your interests and career goals through electives on topics such as planetary science or astrophysics, as well as courses from related departments like astrobiology, computer science, thermodynamics, and mineralogy.

Additionally, you may choose to conduct research alongside our top faculty, such as building ultralow-temperature cryogenic devices or studying the latest images from spaceborne observatories.

Many of our graduates go directly into positions at NASA research centers and in the industry or to graduate school. Even if you go in a different direction, this program will give you the skills you need to continue working in many related sciences.
