Film Studies Welcomes Communications Expert Diana Fernández-Romero as Visiting Scholar

Professor Diana Fernández-Romero, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos of Madrid, is a visiting scholar this October with the Film Studies program.
Fernández-Romero and Barbara Zecchi, professor of film studies and head of the Film Studies Interdepartmental Program, recently co-edited a special issue of the journal Teknokultura (Vol. 21 No. 1, 2024) entitled, "Right to rage: Subjectivity and activism". The articles and video essays that form this volume interrogate who the subjects of rage are and how they are discursively constructed, while also scrutinizing its impact on feminism. They inquire into why some expressions of rage gain political traction while others are rejected, and they undertake a critical analysis of the strategies employed to disembody rage and overcome its pathologization.
During her time at UMass, Professor Fernández-Romero will collaborate with Zecchi on a follow-up project focused on the silent rage of older women. This collaboration will represent a significant advancement in the study of the intersection between gender dynamics, aging and ageism, and affect theory.
Fernández-Romero will also give a series of informal talks with the graduate students in Zecchi's fall 2024 graduate-level class on aging studies as well as a lecture for the programs of Film Studies and Spanish and Portuguese Studies.
Diana Fernández Romero is Associate Professor of Communications and Media Studies at Rey Juan Carlos University (Madrid, Spain). Her research interests include Discourse Analysis, Communication and Gender, Gender-based Violence, Feminist Pedagogies, and Feminist Media Activism. In recent years, she has held visiting researcher positions at the University of California Santa Barbara; University of California Riverside; Birkbeck, University of London; Humboldt Universität zu Berlin; and Università di Bologna.
