Brazilian Music Trio Choro Das 3 to Perform at UMass, Eric Carle Museum Nov. 8-9
Content
The internationally acclaimed Brazilian music trio Choro das 3 will make two presentations in November. Both events are free and open to the public.
It is impossible to understand the origins of Samba, Bossa Nova, and Brazilian Popular Music without listening to Choro. When the Portuguese Modas were combined with the African Batuques by Afro-Brazilian musicians in the 19th century, the result was a music style that joined the rich melodic and harmonic traditions of European music with complex polyrhythmic African styles. The Brazilian Choro then evolved in the 20th century to become one of the most beautiful music genres in the world.
The first one, called "Choro: The Essence of Brazilian Music," will introduce the genre at the origins of Brazilian music in the 19th century and its evolution until today. This event will happen on Friday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. at the Herter Hall Annex, Room 231.
The second event is a music concert by Choro das 3 at the Eric Carle Museum on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. Space is limited for this event, so reserve your ticket here.
If you want to see the result of an incredible merger of African and European music traditions that took place in Brazil, join us for this two-day event in November.
Events are sponsored by the Lidia Jorge Chair in Lusophone Studies, the Camões Institute, the Luso-American Foundation, and Spanish and Portuguese at UMass.
