Caryn Brause, associate professor of architecture, has been named a 2022 Women in Design Award of Excellence honoree from the Boston Society for Architecture (BSA). She was honored in Boston at a reception following the Boston Society of Architects Women in Design Intersections Symposium on Oct. 28.
The prestigious award is presented in recognition of a person who has built one's own life around design, whose work exemplifies the best of process and product, and who uses a position of achievement to give back to the world of design and to the community at large.
“I am deeply honored to be included in such a distinguished field of accomplished women designers.”
In addition to teaching, Brause is the principal of SITELAB Architecture + Design. Her award-winning socially engaged design work has had broad impact in the region by addressing issues such as food insecurity, building material reuse, and youth empowerment.
Through her many activities, Brause connects the academy and the profession, and she works to translate research into practice domains. Her current research projects examine the relationship between higher education-built environments and student learning and development.
She is author of “The Designer's Field Guide to Collaboration," and co-founded and served as inaugural design editor for the journal Technology | Architecture + Design. She has also served on several committees, including the AIA Higher Education Advisory Team, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards Education and Awards Committees and she currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Western Mass AIA chapter.
Brause joins UMass Department of Architecture professors Emerita Kathleen Lugosch and Sigrid Miller Pollin as previous Women in Design award winners.
