This in-person teaching certificate is ideal for educators and educational professionals in Western Massachusetts who are seeking foundational and applied knowledge and skills in social justice education. Students will learn to develop, facilitate, teach, and assess Social Justice Education curricula in their professional contexts.

The Social Justice Education (SJE) graduate certificate in Teaching for Diversity has two tracks. Track A is designed for graduate students teaching undergraduate Diversity or Social Justice courses on the UMass Amherst campus, and Track B is designed for graduate students preparing for Social Justice teaching in schools or related venues (such as after-school programs).

The certificate consists of the following 5 courses (15 credits total):

  • 2 core SJE courses
  • 2 electives to be chosen from a list of SJE, College of Education, and cross-campus content courses dealing with Diversity and Social Justice academic content or departmentally specific practica
