Dan"As a Physician Assistant, I’ve come to deeply appreciate how my undergraduate degree in Nutrition laid a solid foundation for my career. Nutrition is at the core of preventive medicine, an aspect of medicine that is not nearly focused on enough during medical training. Having that background has allowed me to approach patient care with a more holistic perspective. I entered PA school with a strong understanding of biochemistry, human physiology, and the complex relationship between diet, chronic disease, and overall health—knowledge that proved invaluable in both the classroom and clinical settings.
My nutrition training taught me not just the science behind food and metabolism, but also the behavioral and cultural aspects of eating, which has helped me connect with patients more effectively and provide practical, sustainable lifestyle guidance. Whether I'm counseling a patient with diabetes, managing cardiovascular risk, or supporting someone through recovery, my nutrition background enhances my ability to provide comprehensive, compassionate care.
Furthermore, as a PA working in dermatology, there are many common skin concerns—such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and even premature aging that have nutritional components or can be exacerbated by dietary habits. Essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and antioxidants, all of which play a crucial role in skin integrity and healing were a focus of my undergraduate education and allowed me to dive deeper into the underlying etiology of these diseases.
I truly believe that a degree in Nutrition is one of the most relevant and advantageous paths for anyone aspiring to become a PA. It equips you with scientific rigor, clinical insight, and a patient-centered mindset—all of which are essential in today’s healthcare environment."
