Alison Martin is a Public Health Sciences senior staying at UMass as a graduate student in the 4+1 Master's Program.
Who are some people you feel have contributed to your success at UMass?
I am grateful to say that many people have contributed to my success here at UMass. I want to extend my gratitude to the wonderful SPHHS team I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the last two years and thank my advisors Jesse Hunsicker, Brigid Williams, Monica Roche, and our outreach director, Risa Silverman. Together, they have helped me navigate the academic and community-based opportunities in public health and have supported me throughout my time here at UMass. As a whole, the SPHHS faculty and my fellow public health peers, with whom I’ve had the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with, have played a valuable role in my success here at UMass.
What is your favorite UMass memory?
One of my favorite memories is the eclipse during my sophomore year. It was a fascinating experience, and it also showed the sense of community here at UMass. The campus really came together for a few minutes, pausing what they were doing to watch what was happening outside.
What surprised you most about your major?
I was most surprised by how interdisciplinary and collaborative the field of public health is. I was excited to learn about the endless paths within health research that you can pursue, whether it's studying new topics, pursuing different roles, or working in different sectors. I am excited to say I’ve had numerous opportunities to take part in this team-based aspect of public health and explore the vast opportunities with my peers and faculty.
What’s next after UMass?
After I get my undergraduate degree, I’ll spend the summer as an intern in research and development on a medical evidence team before returning to UMass for an additional year to complete my 4+1 MS in Epidemiology program. After completing my master’s, I hope to work in the clinical research field.
What made your UMass experience special or unique?
My time working in Public Health Peer Advising has certainly made my experience at UMass special. It has been a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with fellow public health students and the academic advising and student success teams. I’ve been introduced to valuable resources on and off campus and have had the opportunity to connect with staff and faculty members.
