Ryane Callahan ’25 graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Sciences with a focus in healthcare management and administration. After graduating from UMass Amherst, Callahan began work at MEDITECH as a Client Services Specialist.

What has your experience at Meditech been like so far, and what does your job entail?

My experience at MEDITECH has been incredible thus far. I started my position as a specialist in client services for our license customers in January of 2025. The first year for new hires is mostly training and onboarding, as our product is substantial. It has been challenging yet so rewarding to learn the applications I support for the MEDITECH Expanse software.

My responsibilities include troubleshooting our Expanse product customers in the Community-Wide Scheduling (CWS), Ambulatory (AMB), Authorization and Referral Management (ARM), and Patient Connect (PTCON) applications. I utilize Salesforce to open and resolve customer cases and track bugs, updates, ideas, and enhancements using JIRA/Atlassian.

How has UMass prepared you for this opportunity, and does your education support your work with Meditech’s Expanse?

UMass provided me with countless opportunities to grow as a student and young professional. I was a member and event coordinator for the University Programming Council (UPC), where I learned how to manage budgets, plan events, and become a team player. The School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) utilizes presentations in classes quite often, which prepared me for my position at MEDITECH, where I present information I’ve learned to my higher-ups and eventually customers via presentations and seminars.

What made you choose UMass and the School of Public Health and Health Sciences?

I initially entered UMass enrolled in the Exploratory Track in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS), but once I took Dr. Daniel Gerber’s Public Health 160: My Body, My Health, I fell in love with public health. My older sister was also a public health graduate from UMass Amherst in 2019, and she loves the work she does at Sun Life.

What is a favorite memory you have from your time at UMass?

There are too many to choose from! If I had to choose my favorite memory, it would be trips to Berkshire Dining Hall’s Late Night with friends. But there is no better feeling than being dropped off and left to your own devices as a freshman, with the whole world in front of you.

How did you draw encouragement from your SPHHS education during your job search and early career experience?

I always knew that I wanted to be involved with hospitals and healthcare, which was an integral part of my early SPHSS core classes. I actually learned about MEDITECH from one of the academic advisors at SPHHS. She helped solidify my resume and prep for my interviews.

How could other alums and students do the same as they start their career journeys?

My best advice for other alums and students is as follows:

  • Learn when NOT to take “No/Denied” for an answer (but still use your best judgment).
  • Protect yourself and make yourself known.
  • If you want something bad enough, work for it.
  • Introduce yourself to everyone you meet.
  • Reach out to UMass alums via LinkedIn for informational interviews about jobs you may see yourself working in the future. Never ask them for a job during this interview. They may offer an opportunity, but the purpose is to learn from them.
  • Tweak your resume and cover letter for each job you apply for.
  • Try not to click apply on websites like Indeed or Glassdoor; use them to find listings, then apply via company websites if possible!
  • Be authentically yourself.
