The School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) has announced that Megan Harvey, instructor in the SPHHS Professional and Online Programs, is the winner of the school’s 2025-2026 College Outstanding University+ Teaching Award. The award is given annually to recognize excellence in teaching among University+ instructors and to honor them for their teaching accomplishments.
The review committee commented that “Megan stood out for her clear teaching philosophy focused on fostering motivation and independence, learning after failing and trying again, and highlighting inclusion through universal design for learning.”
“I was thrilled to have been nominated – the idea that my students would take the time out of their lives to submit a nomination is an incredible honor,” says Harvey. “It sounds cliche, but that meant so much to me. To then receive the award is an incredible additional honor!”
This past academic year, Harvey taught SPHHS 616: Epidemiology & Biostatistics B: Evidence, Threats and Action, stating that she loved this combined approach to learning epidemiology and biostatistics.
“My goal is for students to concentrate on what I call the ‘10,000 foot view,’” says Harvey. “The specific content we cover each week is important (of course!) but more than anything else I want students to see the larger picture within public health. I love when the pieces click into place. I hope I pass along my love of public health – and the idea that it's expected that you stink at doing something the first time you try it. It gets easier and more intuitive with practice! If you already knew how to answer every question the first time, you wouldn't need the class. Don't be afraid of getting something wrong!”
