Panelist: Nele Van Dessel

Nele Ven Dessel
Nele Ven Dessel

Nele Ven Dessel is a scientist and executive specializing in oncology, cancer biology, and bio-engineering. She is currently the CEO of Ernest Pharmaceuticals, based in Amherst, Massachusetts, a position she has held since October 2018. In this leadership role, she drives the development of novel therapeutics at the intersection of biology and technology. 

Before joining Ernest Pharmaceuticals, Nele served as a postdoctoral researcher in The Forbes Group at UMass Amherst from September 2012 to September 2018. Her research during this time further deepened her expertise in molecular biology, cancer research, and innovative treatment methodologies. 

Earlier in her career, Nele spent five years as a scientific researcher (Ph.D.) in the Laboratory of Biosignaling and Therapeutics at KU Leuven, Belgium. There, she contributed to advancements in oncology and biosignaling, laying the foundation for her future work in translational science and biotechnology leadership. 

Nele holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Oncology and Cancer Biology from KU Leuven, where she also obtained her master’s degree in Bio-engineering, majoring in cell and gene technology. She graduated magna cum laude, reflecting her academic excellence and commitment to scientific rigor.
