Declaring the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Major

Information for transfer students and those currently enrolled at UMass.

Before declaring the speech, language, and hearing sciences major, all students should explore the professions on the student information section of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association website.

Incoming Students

Admissions to the undergraduate degree program are administered through the University Undergraduate Admissions Office. Students may enter the department as freshmen or as transfer students. Please refer to their website for requirements and application deadlines.

High School Students

High school students applying to the University of Massachusetts Amherst who want to declare speech, language, and hearing sciences should list their intended major on their Common Application to the university. Please review the Freshman Admissions Requirements to help with the application process. There are no additional requirements for entry into the speech, language, and hearing sciences major.

Students Transferring From Another University

Students applying to the University of Massachusetts Amherst who want to be considered for speech, language, and hearing sciences should list their intended major on their Common Application to the university. Please refer to these Transfer Admissions Requirements to assist in the application process. The major can be completed in two years without prerequisite coursework; however, transfer students can get ahead by taking statistics and child development before entering UMass.

Students Transferring From Another Major or From Exploratory Track

Students transferring from another major or the exploratory track should plan to attend a major information session run by our peer advisors. Please email slhs-peers [at] umass [dot] edu (slhs-peers[at]umass[dot]edu) for more information.

After attending the session, students will be contacted by our undergraduate advising team to answer additional questions and/or help them declare the major.
