My research focuses on the health of women, transgender, and non-binary people, drawing on bioethical theory and the empirical methods of health services research. I use mixed methods, blending qualitative and quantitative empirical approaches with normative ethical analysis. My current projects relate to the medico-legal construct of medical necessity and how it is enacted through conflict over claims for gender-affirming care. I am particularly interested in the implementation of state laws which attempt to regulate bodily autonomy and the effects of these laws on health equity and outcomes.
