UMass Amherst Pipa Project to Present ‘CLICK! Stories, Photos, Dance,’ Storytelling Event at Eric Carle Museum May 10
The Pipa Project at UMass Amherst has collaborated with the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art to present “CLICK! Stories, Photos, Dance,” a multilingual storytelling event celebrating translation through image, text and movement, Sunday, May 10, from 2-4 p.m. at the Carle Museum. The event is free with museum admission.
Inspired by the museum’s “CLICK!” exhibition and curated by Leonard S. Marcus, the program features a series of bilingual storytelling performances that bring together picture books, translation and dance. The program includes English-German, English-Spanish, and English-Portuguese story times, highlighting works such as “Now Go Be Happy,” “Mr. Boneman!,” “Dance!,” and “Contradança,” presented through dance and storytelling.
Founded by Tal Goldfajn, assistant professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, the Pipa Project is a community engagement initiative within UMass Amherst’s Spanish and Portuguese Studies program. Through collaborative translation, bilingual storytelling, and creative performance, the project highlights the richness of multilingualism, strengthens community connections, and develops linguistically inclusive cultural programming.
At the center of the initiative is the course Community, Storytelling, Translation, offered each fall and open to students across the Five College Consortium. In a region shaped by vibrant Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking communities, the course works in close partnership with the Carle Museum to expand inclusive, community-oriented programming while engaging students in meaningful public-facing work. While the project’s core languages are Spanish, Portuguese and English, it has also developed storytelling programs in Quechua, Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew and German.
The Eric Carle Museum is located at 125 West Bay Road in Amherst. For more information about the event, contact the museum at 413-559-6300 or email Goldfajn at [email protected].
