UMass Amherst Pipa Project to Present Bilingual Storytelling Event Highlighting Brazilian Picture Books at Eric Carle Museum April 26

The Pipa Project at UMass Amherst will present “Picture Books from Brazil: Bilingual Story Times” at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art on April 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Offering an afternoon of storytelling and music celebrating Brazilian children’s literature, the event will feature a series of bilingual readings alongside live musical performance.

The program begins at 2 p.m. with a bilingual story time featuring “Chupim” by Itamar Vieira Junior, illustrated by Manuela Navas and translated by Tal Goldfajn and Camila Massaki Gomes. At 2:30 p.m., the band BR413 will perform Brazilian music.

A second bilingual reading at 3 p.m. will highlight “Contradanca” by Roger Mello, translated by Kiley Malloy. The event concludes at 3:30 p.m. with a reading of “Mergulho” by Volnei Canonica and Mariana Massarani, translated by Bruna Danta Lobato.

The Pipa Project is a UMass Amherst initiative founded by Goldfajn, assistant professor in the Spanish and Portuguese Studies department, which promotes picture books in translation.

The event is sponsored by UMass Amherst’s Spanish and Portuguese Studies program, the Pipa Project and UMass Civic Engagement and Service Learning, in collaboration with the Eric Carle Museum.
