Jayati Ghosh Joins World’s Oldest Scientific Academy
Jayati Ghosh, professor of economics, has been inducted as an invited foreign member of the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome, the oldest scientific academy in the world.
Ghosh is an internationally recognized development economist whose work spans globalization, macroeconomic policy and issues of gender and development. Prior to joining UMass in 2021, she taught economics for 35 years at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and has authored or edited 21 books and more than 200 scholarly articles. She also writes regularly for newspapers, journals and blogs.
Her honors include the International Labour Organization’s Decent Work Research Prize in 2011, the 2023 Galbraith Award from the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and the 2023 International Economics Association Fellow Award. Ghosh has advised governments in India and elsewhere and consulted for several international agencies.
Founded in 1603, the Accademia dei Lincei, or Lincean Academy, is Italy’s national academy of sciences and serves as a scientific and cultural advisor to the president of Italy. Notable past members include Galileo Galilei and Enrico Fermi.
