Deepankar Basu, Graduate Students Receive ‘Best Paper’ Award from Economics Journal
A paper authored by Deepankar Basu, professor of economics, and economics doctoral students Cameron Hass and Thanos Moraitis has received the 2025 Annual Best Paper Award from the editorial board of the Review of Radical Political Economics (RRPE).
The award recognizes the paper, “Intensification of Labor and the Rate and Form of Exploitation,” which examines how the intensification of labor affects the rate of exploitation within capitalist production systems. Using a linear model of production in both one- and two-department forms, Basu, Hass and Moraitis found that increasing labor intensity consistently raises the rate of exploitation.
The research develops a new framework for incorporating labor intensity into widely used economic production models and offers insights into how exploitation changes across different economic conditions.
Each year, the journal’s editorial board selects one article for the award from papers published in the prior year. RRPE publishes scholarship in political economy and radical economics.
