A new Massachusetts bill signed into law in November includes substantial bond authorizations, with one of its flagship provisions being a $500 million capital re-authorization for the Commonwealth's "Life Sciences Initiative." This provision stands to benefit UMass Amherst, including the College of Natural Science's Food Science program.
At a ceremony highlighting the bill's statewide impact, Governor Maura Healey, joined by state leaders and dignitaries, emphasized the bill's extensive scope.
Speaking with radio station WAMC, Senator Jake Oliveira of Ludlow highlighted the bill’s investments in UMass Amherst, which will support the expansion of its Department of Food Science and the creation of a “regional resilient and sustainable food innovation hub”:
“The University of Massachusetts, which has long been seen as a leader for food science—we've invested about $30 million in that within the economic development bill.”
