The AS in turfgrass management at UMass Amherst is an applied science program focusing on the production and maintenance of grassed areas, including home lawns, parks, golf courses, and other athletic surfaces.

While preparing to become a professional turfgrass manager, you’ll blend courses in the technical expertise of turfgrass culture and physiology with the challenges of managing insects, diseases, and weed populations to keep turf areas green and healthy.

Hands-on experience through internships, labs, and field experience is a critical part of the program. The Stockbridge School also offers the nation’s only tennis turf research program at the Joseph Troll Turf Research Center.

As a graduate, you’ll choose from a broad range of careers in municipal and state positions, private and public golf courses, and lawn and landscape companies, as well as opportunities to start your own business. Additional career options include golf course design, urban planning, and marketing.
