About
Dr. Christopher Martell (Ph.D. 1988 Hofstra University) is the Clinic Director of the Psychological Services Center and a lecturer in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at UMass Amherst. Dr. Martell has specialized in the practice of empirically based psychological treatments. He has worked as a research therapist on three NIMH-funded clinical trials and has been a research consultant on psychotherapy treatment development and outcome studies using behavioral activation (BA) for depression in the U.S., U.K., and the Netherlands. Furthermore, he has conducted and contributed to the development of affirmative CBT with lesbian, gay and bisexual adults. Dr. Martell is the first author of three books: Depression in Context: Strategies for Guided Action with Michael Addis, Ph.D. and Neil S. Jacobson, Ph.D. (2001), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies with Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Clients, with Steven Safren, Ph.D. and Stacey, Prince, Ph.D. (2004), and Behavioral Activation for Depression: A Clinician’s Guide (2010), with Sona Dimidjian, Ph.D. and Ruth Herman-Dunn, Ph.D. He has co-authored five other books, including: Overcoming Depression One Step at a Time: The New Behavioral Activation Approach to Getting Your Life Back (2004), with Michael Addis. Additionally, he has published in peer reviewed journals and contributed chapters to edited textbooks. His work has been translated into 7 languages. He has trained and supervised therapists around the world. He is board certified in Clinical Psychology, and in Behavioral & Cognitive Psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology.
