Slavery North Initiative to provide exclusive media access on December 13, 2024, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. during the Slavery North Initiative at UMass Amherst Holiday Open House
Available for interviews will be founding director and Provost Professor of art history Charmaine A. Nelson and members of the initiative’s first cohort of fellows.
The Slavery North Initiative, launched in 2022, is a one-of-a-kind academic and cultural destination where scholars, thinkers and artists research and build community that transforms society’s understanding of the neglected histories of trans-Atlantic slavery in Canada and the U.S. North.
“Slavery North has accomplished several important milestones including winning a $2.65 million Mellon Foundation grant, moving into a newly renovated space, launching our educational programming, and welcoming our first cohort of fellows,” Nelson said. “Our Holiday Open House is an opportunity for us to celebrate these accomplishments with our friends, supporters, and collaborators as we contemplate the transformative work that lies ahead.”
The media preview (2:30 p.m to 3:30 p.m.) will be followed by a meet-and-greet with Nelson and the 2024-25 Slavery North Research Fellows beginning at 3:30 p.m. UMass Amherst Chancellor Javier Reyes and College of Humanities and Fine Art Dean Lupe Davidson will give remarks. Also attending will be Smith College associate professor of the study of women and gender and Visiting Research Professor Fellow Jennifer DeClue, University of New Brunswick Ph.D. Student Fellow Chris Gismondi, and UMass Amherst philosophy professor and Visiting Research Professor Fellow Julia Jorati.
The Holiday Open House will feature live music by student musicians and light refreshments will be served. Paid parking is also available on-site.
