In the early afternoon of Oct. 28, prominent HFA alumni returned to campus to share their wisdom, experiences, and career journeys with HFA students during "From Theory to Practice," held in South College Commons. These alumni included Laura Bailey ‘03, Theater and English; Mai Cortes ‘93, French; Esther Cuesta Santana ‘02, ’09MA, ’15PhD, Comparative Literature; Christina Gantcher ‘94, Comparative Literature; Peter Howard ‘80, Comparative Literature; Alex Karis ’97, Art; Bob LaRussa ’76, History; Sarah Oh ‘15, History of Art & Architecture; Michael Partridge ‘92, English; and Diana Santiago ‘00, Legal Studies. “Celebrating the Power of the Humanities and Arts,” held on Oct. 28 in the Campus Center Amherst Room, was evening that honored faculty, students, and alumni accomplishments. Among its honorees included seven HFA faculty members, five of whom were in attendance and were recognized by Dean Barbara Krauthamer. Read more.
The Department of Music and Dance hosted its 48th annual Multiband Pops concert, featuring a spectacular, fast-paced showcase of jazz, wind, orchestral, vocal, chamber and percussion ensembles, plus the Minuteman Marching Band. View the photo gallery, with photos taken by Professor Eric Berlin.
The UMass Department of Theater marked its 50th anniversary with an evening celebrating Black theater-makers whose bold work has appeared on our stages with "Black Playwrights: 50th Anniversary Special Event." This event, directed by Behnam Alibakhshi and curated by Dr. Priscilla Maria Page, honored Black creativity with staged readings and a conversation on Black creativity—past, present, and future. The Department of History continued its Feinberg Series with "Ellsberg's Mutiny: War and Resistance in the Age of Vietnam, the Pentagon Papers, and Watergate," a lecture by UMass Amherst historian Christian Appy, who discussed Daniel Ellsberg’s remarkable transformation from Cold War hawk to antiwar whistleblower. UMass Minuteman Marching Band (UMMB) alumni were invited back to campus to play with the UMMB once more for two great ensembles: one at the weekend's hockey game, and one at Saturday's football game. Take in views from the football game.
