Follow Your He(art): Three HFA Couples Share Relationship Advice this Valentine’s Day
Content
In the heart of UMass Amherst's College of Humanities & Fine Arts (HFA), where creativity and intellect intertwine, love stories unfold like masterpieces on a canvas. This Valentine's Day, we bring you three extraordinary love stories from alumni within HFA and share their best pieces of advice to maintain a successful relationship that will stand the test of time.
Chris Litster & Mary Litster
Chris Litster, a '91 French major, and Mary Litster, an '93 education major, share a love story that began within the lively confines of UMass Amherst. However, their romance truly ignited after Chris graduated, running into each other often through their shared connection to Greek life.
“Mary is two years younger than me, which meant I had two additional years of coming up to campus on the weekends," Chris said. "We met thanks to running in the same circles and seeing each other at various events."
Their relationship advice? "Always remember to laugh," they said. "Commit to scheduling a date night just for the two of you regularly. Time flies, memories fade - take lots of pictures and reminisce a lot to remember all the good times and special moments in your family's life."
Hisao Kushi & Karen Kushi
Hisao Kushi '88 and Karen Kushi '88, HFA graduates, share their wisdom for nurturing a lasting bond.
"I think it helps if you’re both kind of easygoing. Don’t take things too seriously. Be optimistic," suggests Hisao.
Karen adds, "Always be respectful and kind. Check in with each other and make sure they’re doing okay. Even if it’s something little, do different things to show you care for each other. Be sure to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ often - especially for small things like making the bed. Try to avoid the phrases ‘you never’ or ‘you always’.”
In reference to a recent TikTok trend, Karen playfully concludes, “Okay, last thing, peel the orange, and be grateful you have someone you can peel an orange for!”
(P.S. The couple was also featured on the Meet Cutes NYC Instagram last year!)
Bill Noland & Madeleine Noland
With nearly 34 years of marriage, Bill Noland '86 and Madeleine Noland '89 reveal the secret to their successful relationship, emphasizing the importance of showing up for each other.
"Involve yourself and take an active role in supporting each other's dreams and aspirations, and with your spare time, collaborate in supporting UMass!" they exclaim.
Together, this power couple have continued to bond through their passion and commitment to continually support the humanities and fine arts.
During this season of love, let these tales of enduring romance and heartfelt wisdom inspire both the UMass community and beyond. Within the halls of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, may the spirit of love and collaboration continue to thrive.
Happy Valentine's Day!
