Our English BA is a broad introduction to American, British, and Anglophone literature. Majors develop essential professional skills, learning to write and speak well, think analytically and critically, persuasively engage audiences, and solve problems quickly.

As an English major you’ll combine foundation courses and electives to customize the major to your interests. While you’re not required to choose a particular focus for upper-level courses, you may concentrate on one area of literature or choose a specialization in American studies; creative writing; professional writing and technical communication; digital humanities; environmental humanities; literature as history; social justice; the study and practice of writing; teaching the English language arts; or an individualized option. Most courses are capped at 20 to 35 students to allow for reading discussion and attention to writing.

We round out the major with extensive extracurricular options, internship guidance, and career preparation support to help students plan for life after graduation. Some students pursue secondary-education licensure in conjunction with the major, while others go on to graduate programs.
