Admissions

The application deadline for fall admissions is December 1. Applicants typically receive admissions decisions by early March. Finding a good fit with a potential advisor is one of the most important parts of graduate work. Applicants are strongly encouraged to reach out to faculty to discuss research interests and funding opportunities.

A successful applicant should have:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience as an educator (P-20 or out-of-school), education researcher, or other relevant position.
  • All applicants must possess a U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution with a minimum 2.75 GPA. Exceptions may be made for applicants with GPAs below 2.75 who demonstrate a high likelihood for success in a graduate degree program in their supplemental application materials.
  • A master's degree in education (e.g., MAT) or a relevant field is preferred but not required.

A complete application should include:

  • A personal statement describing your background experiences, your research interest and/or reasons for pursuing a doctoral or Educational Specialist degree, and potential faculty you would like to work with. If you plan to attend as a self-funded student, please describe your funding source (e.g., grants from your home country).
  • A writing sample of scholarly work, such as a thesis, course paper, or published journal article (PhD applicants only).
  • A current resume or CV
  • Two letters of reference by professional supervisors, mentors, and/or colleagues who are familiar with the applicant’s academic and professional accomplishments. Your letters should describe and assess your academic and professional competence, research capabilities, and potential for success in the program.
  • A certification stating that your application materials were not created by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Transcripts (unofficial is acceptable for application but official transcripts must be submitted before admission offers are sent).
  • IELTS (6.5) / TOEFL (80) / Duolingo (115) scores (international applicants only)
