May 4, 2023 Awards & Honors

Congratulations to the 2023 SBS Outstanding Staff Award Recipients! This award was instituted in 2015 to recognize the contributions and impact of staff members across the College. This year’s recipients are:

  • Marcie Muehlke, assistant director for career services, School of Public Policy
  • Sheila Gilroy, director of administration and research, Department of Economics
  • Stacy Richardson, accountant, Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning (LARP)

Each awardee is nominated by their supervisors and peers. Those who receive this award show a commitment to growth in responsibility and professional development; an ability to improve work processes and systems for increased efficiency; and the willingness to foster a collaborative, positive, and motivating work environment.

Many of Marcie Muehlke’s colleagues praised her for her keen ability to craft systems and strategies to improve School of Public Policy operations. From brainstorming fundraising ideas to providing insight into creating a career seminar for undergraduates to organizing events, Muehlke strives to make the School of Public Policy a better place for students, faculty, and staff. As one of her peers notes, “Marcie is a model of integrity and dedication. She is always positive and enthusiastic, even when conditions are challenging. Her good humor lifts co-workers and students.”

According to her colleagues, Sheila Gilroy “has been the glue that holds the economics department together.” During a challenging time of staff turnover, furloughs, and transitions from remote work, Gilroy’s flexibility and hard work have proven invaluable to keeping the department running. She has managed event planning, hiring, and financial tasks gracefully, making the work seem effortless. Department chair James Heintz notes, “I will forever be grateful to [Gilroy] for her commitment. I don’t think we would have made it through [these difficult times] without her.”

As the accountant for LARP, Stacy Richardson is known for being the smiling face of the front office. In addition to having an infectious positive attitude, she created a new system that more easily tracks faculty expenses as they are processed. This new system makes sorting expenses much more manageable and efficient, keeping those involved up-to-date on the process. Her colleagues note that she is always willing to lend a hand when needed, including assisting with the recent BSLA and MLA program accreditation reviews. Her colleagues say, “Stacy is always pleasant, upbeat, and a pleasure to work with!”

SBS is pleased to recognize the outstanding work of these three staff members. The SBS Outstanding Staff Award is presented annually to those nominated by their peers. Please visit the SBS website for the complete nomination requirements and a list of all past winners.
