SBS Exploratory Track

Discover and explore your interests before choosing a major.

When it comes to selecting a major at UMass Amherst, students have a lot of options. The SBS Exploratory Track program provides new students with the opportunity to discover and explore their interests before committing to a major. Students can explore topics including social issues, policy, politics, economics, public service, legal studies, communication, journalism, sustainable communities, and more. Participation in the program starts as part of the admissions process.

Interesting Classes

Finding the subjects that match students' interests and talents is a critical part of their four-year plan. First-year students in the SBS Exploratory Track take classes that allow them to explore the majors available in the College of Social & Behavioral Science. Students also have access to unique first-year seminars that will ease their transition into life as a college student.

1-on-1 Advising

As part of their participation in SBS Exploratory Track, students will have access to an advising team to help them navigate their experiences in a new university environment. Advisers in the SBS Pathways Center are happy to help students identify their interests, strengths, and academic goals and to offer guidance on the types of courses and programs that match their needs. Peer advisers—our team of more experienced students who offer peer support—are also available to answer questions and provide support to newer members of the College.

Experiential Opportunities

Learn about experiential and co-curricular opportunities such as study abroad, clubs, and internships that pair with your interests. We will introduce you to all of the exciting possibilities in the classroom and beyond.

Major-to-Career Guidance

The SBS Exploratory Track also helps students prepare for their post-graduation career by providing opportunities for real-world work experiences through our Signature Programs, alumni networks, and other university-sponsored programs. Advisers provide guidance on professional skills, resume development, networking, and more.
