Dean's Message - May 2024
Content
First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all our graduating students. Your commitment to academic excellence, resilience in the face of challenges, and passion for learning have brought you to this significant milestone. Whether you are completing your undergraduate, masters, or doctoral studies, your achievements are a testament to your hard work and determination. The graduation events held on the weekend of May 17-19 were joyous, momentous, and a true celebration of your accomplishments. I thank all who helped to make this a wonderful occasion for the students and their family and friends.
To our continuing students, your accomplishments this academic year have been nothing short of inspiring. From groundbreaking research projects and innovative creative works to community service initiatives and leadership roles, you have demonstrated what it means to be a part of our dynamic academic community in SPHHS. Your contributions enrich our institution and set a high standard for future cohorts. I hope you enjoy summer break and come back refueled to complete the rest of your academic journey in AY25.
As we end the academic year, let us take a moment to reflect on the progress we have made together. The collective efforts of our students, faculty, and staff have not only advanced individual goals but have also strengthened our community. In this month's newsletter, you will find highlights of some of the most notable faculty and student achievements, including the winners of our College Outstanding Teaching Awards, Elizabeth Cook (Biostatistics and Epidemiology) and Rong Fan (Nutrition); the university’s spotlight scholar for May, Kate Derose; faculty who have been given Mutual Mentoring Grants from the Office of Faculty Development; and the three students who were bestowed the 21st Century Leaders Award—Sean Bannon, Naicha Chamille Christophe, and Caroline Tran. We are so proud of these achievements.
As I mentioned in my last newsletter, one of our beloved faculty members, Dr. Paula Stamps from the Department of Health Promotion and Policy, passed away this spring. Her Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm on June 1st at the Friedsam Cemetery in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. The cemetery is located on the west side of Route 63, ¼ mile north of the Town Hall in Chesterfield Center. The ceremony will be followed by a reception at the Chesterfield Town Hall. In case of rain the ceremony will be held at the Town Hall.
Finally, before departing on my vacation this summer, I want students to be aware of the Cyprus Study Abroad opportunity for the Winter 2025 term. Dr. Gloria DiFulvio and I will be leading a course called PUBHLTH H490CY: Exploring Food, Culture, Health, and Sustainability. This course provides an interdisciplinary exploration of the intricate relationships between food, culture, health, and sustainability. Hope you can join us for this exciting opportunity!
