Nutrition 580: Medical Nutrition Therapy
Nutrition 580 explores the clinical use of nutrition as part of patient care for various disease states. Led by practicing dietitians and taught through the lens of the standardized approach to care (Nutrition Care Process), students learn medical terminology, how to read and interpret laboratory data and vital signs, how to take blood pressure and blood glucose, and how to conduct nutrition-focused physical examinations. This course provides an excellent exposure to clinical topics for those pursuing dietetics, pre-medical studies, pre-PA, pre-nursing, and other allied health careers.
Students also learn about how different health care team members work together in in-patient settings and are introduced to medications commonly used in treatment of various conditions.
The first in a two-part course sequence,* Nutrition 580 covers patient assessment, food-drug interactions, anemias, upper and lower gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, and more.
*Dietetics students are required to take both parts of the course sequence.
