Daniel Gerber fields a question in the classroom

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences will host a memorial for Dr. Daniel Gerber, who passed away on December 18, 2025. The remembrance will be held on Friday, May 8th, from 3-5 p.m. in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences Hub building, with a virtual option available.

Registration is requested for either the in-person or virtual event.

Dr. Gerber devoted more than three decades of service to the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences as a mentor, advocate, and educator. The former associate dean of academic affairs in the SPHHS, he also served as director of the undergraduate program in public health sciences, director of the online MPH in public health practice program, and as a senior lecturer in community health education. In 2018, he was awarded the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health’s Riegelman Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Public Health Education.

Please use this link if you would like to write a message or share photos in remembrance – either to be shared publicly on a slideshow that will play at the event, or as a private message to be shared with Dr. Gerber’s family. All messages should be submitted by Friday, May 1, 2026.

In his honor, the Dan Gerber Public Health Experiential Scholarship Fund has been established to “support students who learn best by doing and who aspire to pursue a career in public health.” Donations to the scholarship fund can be made here.
