Global Health Concentration
For students in the Global Health concentration
The Global Health concentration prepares students to work collaboratively with local and international organizations to solve complex global health issues. If you are interested in learning about how to apply public health theories and principals across different cultural settings, political contexts, and social environments then consider a Global Health concentration. You will build your coursework in a way that encourages creativity and innovation while studying abroad to advance health equity.
Students in the Global Health concentration must:
- be declared as a Public Health Sciences major in order to pursue this concentration
- study abroad and earn a minimum of 6 credits (of global health related coursework) while abroad (see below)
- complete all PHS major and Global Health concentration requirements, as outlined on the major tracking sheet
A portion of this 21-credit concentration requires a global health study abroad program. Our department's faculty-led study abroad options in Costa Rica and Croatia are approved experiences. Prior approval from this department is required for any non-faculty-led program (you'd find these by utilizing the International Programs Office (IPO)). Students also receive support on choosing the right program for them when enrolled in PUBHLTH 290G, a required 1-credit seminar for this concentration.
Students who are interested in the Global Health concentration must apply for the concentration through the Global Health Concentration application. The application deadline for fall semesters is October 15th. The application deadline for spring semesters is March 15th. Students will be alerted when the application is open each semester.
Your application will be reviewed by the department and you will receive an email from Brigid Williams regarding your status (accepted, pending, denied). If you have been accepted, you MUST schedule an appointment with Brigid Williams (through Navigate). During this appointment, be prepared to provide further details of your plans and interests, including where and when you'd complete your global health abroad program, as well as your overall academic plan to graduate.
