Student Spotlight: Amrita Adak

Amrita Adak is majoring in neurobiology, language, and trauma through the Bachelor's Degree with Individual Concentration (BDIC) program and minoring in psychology and education. Her studies focus on the neurobiological bases of psychological trauma, specifically the intergenerational trauma left by marginalization and marginalizing language. Amrita shared that UMass Amherst helped realize her passion for working with and for groups of people that have been left out or left behind in our healthcare system. 

On campus, she's involved in UMass Rang, a South-Asian fusion a cappella group that promotes diversity in music and culture, as well as the Body Project, an internship program that helps create positive spaces and healthy communities for women on campus struggling with societal pressure to conform. 

Off-campus, she volunteers as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher for the Jones Library and works with individuals from around the globe. In the future, she hopes to work for marginalized communities in order to provide better health care and revolutionize modern health policies so they are based in a patient-centered, culturally-sensitive framework.
