Writing Program Offers Waivers, Additional Sections of College Writing to Fulfill Student Graduation Requirements
Content
To help undergraduate students fulfill their University of Massachusetts Amherst College Writing requirements, the Writing Program will be adding five additional sections of Englwrit 112: College Writing for the spring 2023 semester, as well as a priority deadline for students to apply for a waiver for the course.
Prior to graduation, all students are required to fulfill their College Writing requirement through one of the following options.
Option One: Students must complete Englwrit 112: College Writing, an introductory course to the academic writing process, and Junior Year Writing, an advanced course in the student’s major, focused on the writing of that field and taught by faculty in that discipline. Most students will choose this option.
To help students meet the College Writing requirement, the Writing Program will be adding additional sections of Englwrit112: College Writing for the spring 2023 semester. Students can register for this class through SPIRE. A full list of FAQs may be found here.
Option Two: Students may apply for a waiver to fulfill the College Writing requirement without taking Englwrit 112. These students must still complete Junior Year Writing. This option is ideal if students have taken multiple writing-intensive courses at the college level or written across a range of professional or public contexts.
Apply for a waiver for the spring 2023 semester by Monday, Jan. 23, at 9 p.m. EST by 1) emailing writingplacement [at] umass [dot] edu (writingplacement[at]umass[dot]edu) to request waiver application instructions; 2) completing writing placement, if you haven’t already; 3) writing an essay and reflection, following the application instructions; 4) submitting the essay and reflection through the form in the instructions. Students who submit applications by that deadline will receive their results before Feb. 6, the first day of spring semester classes.
