Writing Program at UMass

The award-winning UMass Amherst Writing Program, which began in 1982, is an independent academic unit that empowers undergraduate and graduate students to develop the rhetorical acumen and flexibility needed for their academic, professional, public, and personal lives. Across our process-based courses and programs, we approach writing as a social act, providing opportunities for students to compose in a variety of media and contexts, draw on their own linguistic and cultural resources, and recognize the intersections of writing, language, and power.
