Fourteen teams of faculty and librarians from UMass Amherst have been awarded Interdisciplinary Research Grants (IRG) for 2023, including eight faculty members from the College of Humanities & Fine Arts.

Interdisciplinary Research Grants (IRG) are offered to teams of faculty and librarians from at least two different schools or colleges within the university with the goals of empowering creativity, strengthening the campus’ areas of interdisciplinary excellence, promoting equitable collaborations and attracting external funding and other forms of recognition across our colleges and schools. The grants are offered in two categories: up to $20,000 and up to $50,000.

The following HFA members will team up with peers from other colleges at the university to complete their research projects:

  • Malcolm Sen, associate professor in the Department of English; Sandy Litchfield in the Department of Architecture; and Marjorie Rubright, associate professor in the Department of English, all of whom will be part of "The Anthropocene Lab";
  • Anthony Tuck, professor and chair in the Department of Classics and chair in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Culture, who will be part of "Investigating Data Literacy Education Using Archaeology (IDEA)";
  • Toussaint Losier, associate professor in the Department of Afro-American Studies; Yemisi Jimoh, professor in the Department of Afro-American Studies; and Yolanda Covington-Ward, professor and chair in the Department of Afro-American Studies, all of whom will be part of "The Souls of Black Folk and the Foundations of African American Studies: Assessing the Training of High School Educators"; and
  • Chris White, assistant professor in the Department of Music and Dance, who will be part of “Is 'Feeling the Beat' Culturally Dependent? Computational, Behavioral, and Neurophysiological Analyses of Meter in Four Musical Traditions."
