Mutating Origins: Collapsing of the Here and There explores the stories of first-generation African migrants in the United States as they plant new roots abroad. The project examines what is carried forward from their places of origin through personal objects and practices of community making. It explores the departure from one’s homeland, the flux and liminality of migrant identity, the duality of home and belonging, and the expectations and tensions embedded in movement, integration, and return.
