Studied abroad in Madrid, Spain during Spring 2024

I went to Madrid for the early-start program with API, so my cohort arrived about one month earlier than others. This allowed me to take four weeks of intensive Spanish classes, greatly increasing my language capabilities and encouraging me to engage with native speakers. I took two more Spanish courses during the spring term because I appreciated the confidence it gave me to fully embrace every aspect of culture in Spain, including language. One of my Spanish courses, Cinema and Society, taught me about Spanish history during the Franco dictatorship and the current political situation, empowering me to identify as an international citizen, rather than a tourist. I lived in a residence with other Spanish students which facilitated fascinating cultural discussions and comparisons (plus I made Spanish friends!). My engagement in all aspects of Spanish life made Madrid feel like a second home to me. I am eager to return to Spain and continue my cultural learning.

I am completing my Honors Thesis by conducting independent research on bisexual identity experiences. Utilizing a multimethod approach, I’ve been able to assess aspects of non-normative sexualities historically and perceptions of bisexuality in today’s times. I applied for the Fulbright fellowship to pursue a Master’s of Global and International Studies at the University of Salamanca. I strive to enter the professional field of international conflict management and work to maintain, strengthen, and build international relationships to mitigate conflict and promote peace.
