Rachel Simoes
Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Major, Minor in Spanish and Environmental Science
Studied abroad in San Sebastán, Spain during Fall 2022 and Hamburg, Germany in Summer 2023
In San Sebastián, Spain I became proficient in the Spanish language and delved into Basque culture through food, mythology, and interactions with locals. Living and learning in the Basque region enriched my view of Spain and encouraged me to dig deeper into local cultures during my travels to France, the Netherlands, Germany, and beyond. I also had the opportunity to be an English Teaching Assistant in two multilingual schools. I developed a passion for teaching which inspired me to apply for a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. Through the DAAD program, I conducted research on microbial communities in the Wadden Sea tidal marshes at the University of Hamburg. I was able to grow both professionally and personally as my network grew. In both experiences, I am immensely grateful to have met a multitude of diverse people who have changed me for the better.
My honors thesis on microbial interaction in soils subjected to long-term warming has inspired me to continue my research career on microbial responses to climate change. I plan to work in environmental or agricultural biotechnology in Boston and eventually attend graduate school. Before graduate school, I hope to participate in an English teaching Assistantship with Fulbright next year.
